How to renew the Cuban passport (and why the extension no longer exists)

If your Cuban passport has expired or is about to, here’s what you need to know today — plainly.

The extension was eliminated in 2023

Since July 1, 2023 (Decree 91 of 2023), Cuba eliminated the passport-extension requirement — for all passports, including the old six-year ones. No Cuban passport needs an extension today. If someone offers to charge you for an “extension,” be wary.

The new passport lasts 10 years

New passports last 10 years (5 years for children under 16). Six-year passports issued before July 2023 are valid until the printed date; once expired, the procedure is a new passport.

Which procedure do you need?

• Renewal — your passport expired or expires soon.
• First-time — you’ve never had a Cuban passport.
• Minors — remember: theirs last 5 years, half as long as adults’.
